EES and ETIAS Guide

We’ve had lots of questions about the new European entry systems, so we’ve put together a simple guide to help explain what’s coming up.

There will actually be two new systems, rolling out at different times—let’s walk through them.

  1. The European Entry/Exit System (EES)

Launch date: October 12, 2025 (with a gradual rollout).
Good news: You don’t need to register in advance, and it’s completely free. Everything happens automatically when you go through border control for the first time after the system starts.

What is EES?
The EES is a new digital system that will replace passport stamping for non-EU visitors entering the Schengen Area.

Why is it being introduced?

To make borders more secure.
To prevent overstays and irregular migration.
To fight identity fraud with digital records instead of paper stamps.

How it works:

When you enter, your fingerprints and facial image will be taken and linked to your passport details.
This information creates a digital record of your entry and exit.
The record stays valid for three years.

Key features:

Biometrics: Fingerprints + facial images.
Automation: Self-service kiosks and faster automated border checks.
Overstay tracking: Helps authorities spot travellers who stay too long.

Who needs it?
All non-EU travelers—including visitors from the United States and United Kingdom.

  1. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)

Launch date: Planned for late 2026.
Important: This one does require online pre-registration and a small fee.

What is ETIAS?
Think of ETIAS as Europe’s version of the US ESTA or UK ETA—a quick online travel authorisation for people who don’t need a visa.

Why is it being introduced?

To improve security by checking travellers before they arrive.
To make border checks smoother and faster.

Where does it apply?

The entire Schengen Area (27 countries) plus Cyprus.

Key details:

Cost: €20 (for travellers aged 18–70).
Validity: Three years, or until your passport expires (whichever comes first).
Requirement: Mandatory for short visits if you don’t already need a visa.

⚠️ Tip: Only apply through the official ETIAS website when it opens. Other sites may charge extra fees — or worse, not provide the authorisation at all.

📖 Full details: ETIAS

👉 Note: If you already need a visa to visit the Schengen Zone, ETIAS does not apply to you. You’ll still need to apply for a regular Schengen Visa through a European consulate.

Final notes

This information is correct as of September 2025, but dates and prices may still change as the systems go live.
We hope this clears up some of the confusion out there. If you come across any official updates or changes, we’d love to hear from you!
